As the Lead Designer for “Cờ Bàn Sử Ký,” this project was a profound journey that merged my passion for Vietnamese history with my drive for innovative design. My core mission was to transform centuries of rich heritage into an engaging, interactive, and visually stunning board game. The Challenge: Crafting History into Playable Art
Our team faced the exciting challenge of distilling complex historical narratives into a format that was both educational and fun. My role as Lead Designer was pivotal: I was responsible for overseeing the entire visual identity of the game, ensuring that every element, from the grand game board to the smallest character token, effectively told a story and immersed players in the essence of each historical era. This demanded a meticulous focus on historical accuracy combined with compelling artistic interpretation.
My Design Process: Blending Tradition with Modernity
My design journey for “Cờ Bàn Sử Ký” began with extensive research into Vietnamese historical art, traditional motifs, and ancient calligraphy. The core challenge was to integrate these classic elements without making the game feel outdated. I opted for a style that balanced traditional Vietnamese aesthetics with clean, modern graphic design principles. This involved a multi-faceted approach:
Character Design & Illustration:
Each historical figure, from the stoic General Trần Hưng Đạo to the elegant Princess Hai Bà Trưng, required a unique illustration that captured their essence and dynamism. I focused on expressive features and poses that brought these legends to life.
Iconography & Symbolism:
I developed a comprehensive set of custom icons and symbols. These were carefully designed to be culturally relevant, intuitively recognizable, and seamlessly integrated into the game’s mechanics, enhancing player understanding without verbose explanations.
Layout & User Experience (UX/UI):
Beyond individual assets, I meticulously designed the overall layout of the game board, cards, and instructions. The emphasis was on intuitive navigation and clarity, ensuring that the historical immersion wasn’t hindered by confusing mechanics. Every element was placed with purpose, guiding the player smoothly through the game’s narrative.
Packaging Design:
